Pickin’ Pumpkins

Candles are definitely a go-to option when it comes to freshening up your home. Put a twist on this traditional home fragrance approach by making it yourself! Pumpkin, of course, is the perfect festive scent for the fall season.

You’ll need: 4 small OR 2 large glass mason jars, 2 table spoons of pumpkin spice, 1 pound of premium candle wax, one package of bleached candle wick (12 inches, minimum), 1/2 cup of liquid oil (use either olive or nut oils), tape, scissors, and a kitchen pot.

Step 1: Place the oil of your choice into the pot and bring it to a light simmer. Be sure to use low heat and Do Not Boil this mixture.

Step 2: Add the pumpkin spice and stir. Then, remove this mixture from the heat and set it aside to cool.

Step 3: Once the oil mixture has cooled for a bit, pour it into a large jar and allow it to infuse for at least 2 full days.

Step 4: After the 2 days have passed, it’s time to complete the process. Cut your candle wax into small pieces and add it to a pot. Put the pot on the stove on medium-low heat and allow the wax to gradually melt.

Step 5: With the melted wax on low heat, start preparing your candle wicks. Measure the wick string to the length of each mason jar and cut. Then, secure the wick at the inner center of each jar with a piece of tape.

Step 6: Pour 2 table spoons of the previously prepared infused oil into each jar. (2 table spoons each for 4 jars; 4 table spoons each for 2 jars)

Step 7: Top off each jar with the candle wax. Stir to combine with oil mixture with the wax evenly. *Be sure not to pull on the candle wick. You’ll want this to stay in place.

Step 8: Place each jar into the freezer for 20 minutes, or place them in the refrigerator for an hour.

Step 9: Once your candles have settled and hardened, light them and enjoy the fall fragrance!
